First car opinion?
« on: October 11, 2007, 06:30:48 PM »
I am almost 16 and planning to buy a car when I'm a junior or senior. I found a few cars that suits my needs.

The 2001-03 BMW 325CI coupe or convertible

The 2001-03 BMW 330CI coupe or convertible

I am planning to get a job and summer job at this point, I have $5000 saved up so far. The cars just a daily commuter to school and stuff. I don't worry about the repairs, my school has an automotive school so I can take it there to get it repaired and tuned cheaper. What do you think the insurance cost would be around on these 2 cars? What do you think of reliability, safety, price?

One more question, coupe or convertible? and how much can you expect it to be in 2010 ish?

Hmm. The coupe is better for you, because insurance on it is cheaper. If your a new driver, insurnace on this may be higher than your monthly car payment! since these cars are worth alot, and they are pretty fast, they are pretty hefty to insure.

The Coupe is a fun car. Its easy to handle, fun to drive, and good on gas. It is pretty simple to handle, becasue it doesnt have the idrive system, but it does lag in luxury at some aspects. As a first car, this car meets and exceeds the safety standards by miles. If you can pay for it, go for it! but let me tell you, as your fist car, this is not a good investment.

First you have to be 18 to buy a car to enter a legal binding contract.  Second I would suggest is getting a second job to pay for the repairs and maintence for a BMW.

Both are nice cars, but the convertibles will be more expensive for insurance and generally more trouble -- soft top replacements, rips, window replacements, leaks, etc.

Consumer Reports magazine says the 3-series is fairly reliable but when they break, parts and repairs are expensive. Just make sure you get a mechanic to check out any car you decide to buy. Here's an article with some more tips:
