VW Jetta Tuning?

Ive got a vw jetta 2002, i live in the emirates, we dont have over here the models that people in the us have like the gli,gls,glx or whatever, there is a standard 1.6L engine or 2.0 one, ive got the 1.6L with an automatic transmission, but i felt that this car isnt giving me enough performance, cause when i drag with a mitsubishi lancer 2006 with an engine the same as mine with the same transmission it goes swiftly pass me, so can anybody give any suggesstions about improving my cars performance, and what about installing a different engine like 2.0 turbo or the 2.8 v6 engine is it safe to install it or its rather better not to mess with car.

Racing cam, Headers, AEM Cold air intake, Replace all your filters. You could do a turbo, yes.

Engine swap in the 2.8 vr6, yes it is safe as they make your model car with that engine in it......that evo wont bother you anymore...they make a 12V and a 24V version.  the 12v puts up 174hp while the 24v puts up 204hp...hope this helped
