Prius Flooding Problem?
« on: March 16, 2008, 01:16:11 PM »
I have a 2007 Toyota Prius that was in a flood. Some water came in through the bottom of the doors, soaking the floor. Now, when I start or turn off the ignition, there is a loud popping in the speakers. The driver and passenger airbags have been disengaged.

I took the car to the dealer, who told me the water had entered a floor-mounted computer and that it would no lonegr work. Also the stereo amplifier would need replacing.

Bottom line: They told me that I should report it to my insurance agent who can then declare it a total loss.

Has anyone else had such problems? Is a new car the only option? HELP!

With water problems it will only get worse as the corosion grows.

I would not let it go, Contact your insurance, if you have good coverage than you will only have your deductable.

I have worked on many flood cars and none of them are the same, they have alot of rust and mold.

The 2004-current Prius with the optional JBL audio has the speaker power amplifier mounted under the front passenger seat.  Additionally if it has the navigation package the Nav computer/Nav DVD drive is under the driver's seat.  Obviously both would stand a chance of getting wet in a situation like you described.  If there are no other symptoms such as the infamous "triangle of death" and/or a check engine light I would simply unplug the electrical connectors from the amp (and the Nav if equipped) and see if the car drives normally.  If it does have issues driving or warning lights/messages come on I would agree that it may have to be written off.

I too know a lot of about electrical and electronics systems in cars and believe me anything can be fixed but will the vehicle ever be right and what other water problems are in store.

Sadly take the best out you got and replace that vehicle via insurance asap.

Hope that helps and best of luck
