Does someone have any idea about how much a person is liable for if they rent a car from a place such as Avis, Hertz or Thrifty without paying for the insurance coverage they offer?  A friend of mine doesn't have her own car so therefore she doesn't have any insurance.  She is renting a car for the weekend and was not sure about her liability with or without purchasing the insurance coverage thru the rental agency.  Any answers would be great as we all know that those rental insurance programs offered by car rental agencies might be quite not cheap:-)

I would always get the insurance, regardless of whether or not you had your own. Think of it this way, $10 a day saves your ass big time in the event you get in an accident and if you have insurance it saves you from paying huge premiums. I would tell her to get the insurance. Cheap nothin, I would rather pay the $10 bucks a day then pay a huge settlement later in the event the car is wrecked. Just tell her to get it. Especially since it's only what, 1, 2 maybe 3 days

im pretty sure they wont rent you a car without insurance, whether its her own policy or buying theirs.  if they will, she is liable for ALL damages.  tell her to buy their insurance, its not expensive and a LOT cheaper if something happens than her having to pay the damages out of pocket.
