Will my car insurance cover me?
« on: January 10, 2008, 01:16:13 PM »
I have liabilty insurance, since full coverage at my age is ridculous, and I was in an accident last night. There was no yeild or stop sign and the lady just stopped as i was looking for cars coming i rear ended her. The police came and he said when i phone my insurance company, to say that I was at fault but i was not given a citation. Two people I know said that since I was not given a citation that my insurance might still cover me. Is this true?  I'm in the state of GA too btw.

Your liability insurance will cover the damage you caused to the lady, but not the damage to your own car.

The only way you will get paid for the damage to your car is if the woman tells her insurance company that she was responsible, in which case her company will pay for the damage. That is not going to happen in this situation.

Since you have liability insurance, you're covered for the person you hit. Not your own damages. You are on your own for getting your car fixed.

If you only have liability coverage, that would be the only thing your insurance will cover, and that coverage is only used for the person you hit. Not being given a citation doesn't add coverage to your policy, they will only pay for the coverage that you signed for and paid for. Sorry.

your fault.  your insurance will pay for the damages you caused to the other vehicle.

you are on your own to repair your car since you only carried liability.

why would your insurance cover you if you eren't at fault?

Liability insurance is to pay for repairs on the vehicle you damaged if it is your fault.  If you rear ended somebody, you are ALWAYS at fault.  It doesn't matter if some idiot hit you and you hit the car in front of you because of it.  So, only having liability will not cover your car.  If it was the other drivers fault, and you only have liability, then their insurance would be responsible for repairing your car.  BUT, if you rear end, its your fault.  So you won't be covered in fixing your car.
