Boosting torque and horsepower on a 2003 VW Passat?
« on: March 07, 2008, 08:57:25 AM »
I was wondering on a 2003 1.8T Standard 4 cylinder Engine that has 170 horses standard, how can one boost the horsepower and torque. On the new 2007 and 2008s the performance is as follows:

TORQUE

207 @  (280 Nm @ 1800-5000) - 4 cylinder

265 @ 2,750 (360 Nm @ 2,750) - VR6

HORSEPOWER:

 200 @ 5,100-6000 rpm - 4 cylinder

        280 @ 6,200 rpm (206 kW @ 6,200) - VR6

My VW Passat from 2003:

Horsepower  170-hp @ 5,900 rpm

Torque 166 lbs.-ft. @ 1,950 rpm

Can I at least boost it to where the 2007 4 Cylinder Engine is at? I have been told ECU chip is the way to go. I don't know much about cars let alone ECU chips, but some people say I need a supercharger, turbo, whatever...exhaust...so some say I could do it for under$1,000 others say $7,000 for a whole new enginge. Please let me know.

One answer says "Put bigger headers on it, Exhaust, cold air intake, Possibly a turbo with intercooler . And if u want to really go to town put a 50 shot of dry nitrous in the intake nitrous isn't expensive around 500$ for the whole setup and to fill the tank about 30 cents."

Yet again I say, I DO NOT know about this stuff. He makes it sound like it's not big deal, but how much is a job like this going to cost me and isn't Nitrous only if you want to fast and the furious with your engine? I'm happy just getting a big boost in horse and torque (between 220-300 horses and more than 200 lbs of torque) I don't need 500-600 horses especially with gas prices now. Please please explain it to me in laymen's terms I am not a specialist in cars, I'm a young guy who can barely change his own oil let alone add "headers and cold air intake" Thanks

You dont need a new engine. Put bigger headers on it, Exhaust, cold air intake, Posibly a turbo with intercooler . And if u want to really go to town put a 50 shot of dry nitrus in the intake nitrus isnt expensive around 500$ for the whole setup and to fill the tank about 30 cents.

Headers go off your manifold that are bigger pipes that connect all into your exhaust. Get a apex exhaust . I got mine off of ebay.com for about 40$ in total. Search exhasuts, cold air intake, and u can get them both for about 80$ and there easy to instal well the intake is and the exhaust will cost about 40$ to be put on. If u really want a horsepower increase add a turbo with intercooler. Go to your local machanic and talk to them about what size turbo for your car and intercooler. Plus dials and switches. If your vw isnt a stick. there is no point in doing anything. check out my myspace www.myspace.com/jimbo111

The simplest way to up the boost is to chip it.  Meaning you get a performance flash done to your ecu.  This will give you substantial more horsepower.

Check out:

also go to:

to read the forums so you know what you can do.  And what other options you have.

Next after the chip I would do is exhaust.  The downpipe is the most restrictive piece of equipment on that car.

These are honestly the best places to start.  Screw an intake.  Its not worth it on that car until later on.
