good used car for $5000?

I'm currently looking for a used car for around $5000, automatic, reasonable fuel mileage, and decently reliable one.

 As for vehicle type I prefer a 4 door or a compact suv. I'm going to keep it as is, meaning no crazy tune-ups or adding a body kit or stuffs like that.

Like most people, the name toyota and honda crossed my mind at first, but lately I'm considering other brands as there are others like mazda, nissan or mitsubishi with similar quality for less cash, but I'm not exactly sure just how reliable they are. Are there any brands (make and model) you'd recommend?

Honda civic crosses my mind. Great gas mileage, but so generic you could almost just unsnap the doors and snap new ones on.



Own one myself. its about 17 years old, but still gets 36 mpg.

Try "www.cars.com", you can type in your criteria and it will show you cars in your price range.

You can check the vendors' web sites to get information about features.

Finally, check "www.consumersreports.org" to get testing information about each model.

i'll tell u what seeing that ur only looking to spend 5000 on a car u dont seem to have alot of money so consider this



insurance on a car is less than an suv so try getting an older accord or civic because the gas mileage and reliability is worth it

A Honda Civic is a good choice. Gets great mileage, fast acceleration, comes in MANY trims from Ex, Lx, Ex wuth Nav, Type-R, Dx etc.

I'd stick with Honda/Acura and Toyota.  They are consistently the highest quality vehicles you can buy.

2000-2002 SL1 or SL2 Saturn



I got a 2001 SL1 last year for $5500 with 52,000 miles and it's proved to be a great car.



My story is I got a new job 45 miles away from my doorstep, that's a total of 90 miles, I own a Toyota Tacoma it's paid for, I love it can't beat a Toyota, but it got at best 15 mpg's, I was spending $300 a month just on gas, so I figured out I had to get a car for around $5000 with a $150 and got at least 30 mpg's to come out even, but I now have paid off the loan on the Saturn, now money ahead! The Saturn is a great little car I get at best 38 mpg's at a low in the cold winters of Wisconsin 32 mpg's, I've put on about 30,000 miles and had to spend $96.50 parts and labor for a front wheel bearing, besides oil changes. It's not the smoothest, quietest ride in the world, It may not have a H (Honda civic) on the grill but if it did I would have paid almost 3 times as much for it.
