Problems with a projection TV?
« on: January 16, 2008, 11:20:13 PM »
I have a Mitsubishi WS-A55 55" projection HD tv.  It's about 5-6 years old, and it's having some problems.  The biggest has just started recently, and I fear it might have resulted from the recent cross-country move I made.

Basically, with no apparent pattern, the picture will start to flash to black for 1/2 a sec, then come back.  Sometimes it does this once, other times it will keep doing it at irregular but repeated intervals for minutes on end.  I don't think it has to do with the cables, because it happens on all of the inputs, and it will even occur when I tune to an input that has nothing connected and the tv goes to blue screen.  While it's doing this, the audio remains constant and perfect.

Is this something I can repair on my own?  If not, how do I find someone to replace it, and what can I tell them to give them the best idea for what the problem is?

Thanks everyone!

Well, here's an interesting addition I just discovered...   if I mute the tv, and wait for a flicker... when it flickers, it cancels the mute and returns to the volume it was at before I muted it.

Does this help identify the problem?

i worked with tvs for a while and i would have to guess it has something to do with the power supply. power supply is most likely bad. I think you should be able to go on the mitsubishi website and find an auhtorized repair shop.

From your description of the "flash to black" episode,  it may well be that your color wheel is shot and needs replacement.  This is a very expensive proposition with the color wheel replacement costing $1,500.  The main reason for color wheel failure is due to improper shutting down of the projection TV which should be cooled down [with the fan running] for at least 20 minutes before actually powering down the whole unit.  Improper cooling down will cause an early meltdown of the color wheels.

Good luck!
