For example, I have a friend with  porsche and the upkeep is very expensive.  For example, tune up, oil change, etc. very expensive--and God forbid if the engine goes or any major mechanical?  So, was wondering others thoughts, etc., on the evo upkeep as opposed to other vehicles.  Again, another example is a Toyota Camry, or Honda Accord, those vehicles seem to run forever, with minimal problems.  Comparatively speaking how does an EVO or an STI compare?  are the websites that actually address such issues?

Thanks for help!

Sinc, --g.

Thank you to Eddie, and others who helped me out.  However, i would like to ask follow up questions, to eddie and others, but i dont know how.  Am i allowed to list my email on here, and I can acquire further info that way?  In any event thank you to every one who answered my question.

Mark, thank you for your help.  Is there anyway I can ask you additional questions about the vehicle?  Thank you so much!  Sinc, --g.

Okay, guys/gals, thank you for your help... last question( I think)... in re: to the engine, etc... what is the reliability of same?  The cars, look great, etc., and the maintenance seems 'do-able' my only sticking point is the engine, power train, etc.  What's the skinny.  I know certain cars, many japanese cars, seem to go, go, go, while others(generally american) seem to have issues with the engine, etc.  So, trying to find out if I get one with 50 k on it or whatever, can i trust it to run to 200(or whatever, you know what i mean).

Its a japanese sports car it'll hold up for a while depending on what you use it for.  tune ups and oil changes are not as exspensive as a european car.

the Evo is a wild and powerful car, really great fun, will put a smile on your face, but a lot of people buy them and can't afford the upkeep, parts are pricey if they go wrong they are petrol guzzlers. I dont think they often go wrong as its a jap car and they are very reliable

The STI, my friend has and she loves it but again it's a sporty car so the upkeep will be expensive :((

Upkeep is a little bit more expensive than the regular base model. Let's go with the engine oil for instance. Required oil is a little superior to ordinary oils being used in let say, a Camry. Fuel is also different as it requires premium. And they're not exactly the fuel efficient Prius-like automobiles. A full tank in my EVO can go around 240 miles before the fuel light comes on, on a regular driving condition. Then there is the brake. When brakes need to be worked on, it'll be more expensive because Evo's have the more superior Brembo brakes. Tires-if you go for the OEM tire which is the Yokohama Advan, it'll cost you more compared to others since the Evo has the softer compound that has a treadwear of about 160 as oppose to 600 on a regular road tire. The Advan will last about 20,000 miles. Regular tires will go around 60,000 miles. There's the turbo which is absent in the base models - expensive. I usually spend around 50 bucks more on oil change on my Evo compared to my Eclipse GS. But let me tell yah! I DON'T GIVE A F#@K! The exhilaration that you feel when you step on the throttle of the EVO is amazing. Even better when you hear that turbo whine and you're back is planted on the back rest. Buttom line....it's worth the extra expense. And oh! Insurance is also a killer! BUT WHO CARES!!!!!

Edit:  Engines on these cars can last for a long, long time. My aunt put 150K miles on her Diamante then sold it to a family friend 3 years ago. He still drives it around in the Chicago area. It depends on how you treat the car. If you treat it right, the car will treat you right in return. Good Luck!!!

eddie is full of crap!  Haha!  I wish my yoko A046 could last 20k miles.  Mines only lasted 12k miles

But eddie is right.  The EVO is still a Japanese car so don't expect to pay Porsche / bmw / mercedes type maintenance costs.  But it is still more than a Honda or toyota

You need synthetic 10-30 oil do that is like $2 per quart.  I use iridium ngk plugs and those cost about $45 as compared to champion platinum plugs that cost $18.  Gas, you should nothing less than 91 octane (or in CA, we call it crappy premium gas).  Tires, my EVO has 32k miles and I'm on my 3rd set but I push my EVO hard.  Brakes, you can go with some EBC green stuff pads which goes for about $79 per set so that's not that bad.  Your regular 15/30/45k maintenance doesnt cost much more than normal......I think

Its when you started modding your car, that's when it gets expensive.  I've dropped down about $7k into my Eco and it's considered lightly modified

This is a racing car for the street. With racing prices and racing maintenance schedule. It requires more expensive service more frequently. It delivers Porsche performance with a relatively cheap buy in, but keeping it operating is more expensive than most owners realize. Factory Brembo pads are $250 a set. It needs MOBIL 1 oil. Rotations every 5K, tires last 10-12K and are $1200 a set.

My approach to maintenance is a little different from the other folks here. For the kind of money I am paying to buy an EVO, I would compare it to the maintenance costs of a lexus/acura/infiniti. My dad has a GS 300 AWD which cost him almost the same as my 2008 EVO GSR fully loaded. However, his maintenance costs are a LOT more than the EVO (except for MPG). If maintenance is a big deal for you, I would suggest going the ACURA TL, CAMRY SE/XLE route. They are both FWDs that are easier and cheaper to maintain.
