Aso when you try to tune in a station, the radio does not sense any stations and continues to search. The Tape deck plays no sound (if its even turning, this I am unsure of).  Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix this problem or any suggestions perhaps?

It looks like that radio is shot, just get it replaced, it would be cheaper to install an aftermarket unit than to try and get it repaired

radio shack carries a lubricant for just such an issue

pull the knob off and lube the shaft

Check out this forum. Many people here are very knowledge about the E38's. I have one and have never had this issue before though. I wouldn't go aftermarket considering the way our setup is with the E38 and the great sound system in the car.

I also wouldn't try any lubricants on the vehicle simply because of the fact that the tuner is very sensitive. It does sound like your tuner is going bad and could be as easy as just pulling it and getting a replacement. There are many people selling parts on the forum as well so you may find it quite inexpesive to replace for a used part.
