Are BMW M3s unreliable?
« on: February 07, 2008, 01:42:48 PM »
I am considering an upgrade from an Infiniti G35 coupe to a used M3.  I understand the performance is much better, but it shouldn't be on paper since the Infiniti has double wishbones, Brembo brakes, oversquare engine, and more displacement.  Could this higher state of tune contribute to less a than reliable nature?  I know about the 2002 bearing recall situation(s).

Nissan's aren't as well known for their reliability as Honda's and Toyota's, the 350's tend to be less reliable than other Nissan's.  BMW are generally reliable (no less reliable than the Nissan's), but they are more expensive to repair and maintain.  The M3 will cost more than other BMW's to repair as the parts are usually more expensive.

As for performance ... the M3 is head and shoulders ahead of the G35.  One, the "m" series BMW's are hand built for speed.  And it comes from a different BMW factory than regular 3 series BMW's.

The G35 is not designed to be a speed focus car so it has been 'detuned' to be more refined ... I suppose.

The closest comparable nissan model to the M3 would be the 350z track.  But this car is still slower than the M3 and is apparently very noisy and hard to drive.

So ... if you have the option of stepping into the M3 and can afford to pay for higher repair and maintenaince bills, then that is the better route to take.

Good luck.

A used M3 will definately cost more to maintain then you infinity (nissan).  Instead of an M3, you may want to consider a 335i, which also has better performance than any G or 350z.  For the price of  a used M you can come close to a new 335i.

The G35 is not in the same class as an M3.

The G35 is in the class of a 3 Series 2.5 as far as the engine, however doesn't have the handling that BMW incorprates.

All BMW's are highly reliable.
