these may make the car more owner tune-up and fixing friendly. cut down the cost and provide more to safety features thus prolong the use without going to dollar sucking replacement mechanics.

Why don't you just buy an old one. And by the way on board computers make today's cars so much better than they have ever been, a little trickier to repair but so much better overall.

Its ODB-II.. an emissions standard imposed by the government that started all the computerized b.s.

Blame them.

However computers do help the car run better, and more reliable.  Which means you fix them half as many times, but it costs you twice as much to fix.

I had an M3 for 5 years.. I brought it to the shop once.. after hitting a racoon at about 120mph.  Other than that I only took it to the shop for brakes, etc.  It had 166k miles on it, never once left me on the side of the road, and started every.. single.. time I put the key in.   The power windows never failed.. nothing ever went wrong with it.  I took good care of it, but no better than anyone else would.   Bmw's are incredibly reliable in my opinion.

They keep the price of the car up because the BMW name is suppose to imply sporty luxury that only people with loads of money can buy. The regular Joe is not suppose to be able to afford one of these. If you can't afford whatever goes into owning a BMW (initial cost of car, maintenance, premium gas, etc) then you really shouldn't get one.

If you want something that has a low cost of maintenance, get a Honda.

I know it doesnt seem like it, but the computers make the cars overall repair bills go down.  There are less repairs on todays car with computers then the cars of yesterday without computers.  For 98% of the public the computers in todays cars save them money in the repair department.  The 2% of people that might save money if there car was not a giant computer are the people that know how to fix a car.  Im not talking your weekend warriors that can change there oil or brakes, I am talking people who really know the ins and outs of a car.  Other then those guys, I think that the computers in cars save us more money in the long run then they cost us.

BMW make luxury cars.  They are not designed for well meaning enthusiasts to pop the hood and tinker around with them.  They are also using highly advanced technology to achieve the power and emissions that they need to.

Most modern cars are pretty high tech, and that's a good thing.  I used to drive cars from the 70s and 80s and they were always breaking down.  Sure, it was cheap to fix, but then they constantly needed fixing.

I've owned three modern cars since 2000, and none of them have ever broken down or needed a mechanic.  I call that progress.

Umm...first off, those computers help make the power that you like. Second, they help keep the power on the road instead of in the ditch. (BMWs traction control is the shit!) I agree on the repairs though. Thats why I drive a 1992 525i as a daily driver. Not many computers to deal with. But trust me friend, BMWs don't cost a lot because of the computers. They buy those from other companies like Bosch. Not expensive. BMWs cost a lot because the engineering that goes into making thier cars. It takes a lot of brainpower and time to design and build such a perfect car. Take the 6 series for example. They tested that thing for almost 2 years before they released it. Thats a lot of R&D. R&D costs money. They are trying to deliver you the best car they can regardless of cost. Honda pumps out Accords and people buy them because Consumer Reports tells them to. BMW pumps out 5 series cars and people buy them because they know a quality auto when they see one. One more thing...the BMW dealership in Portland Oregon is cheaper by the hour than both Honda and Toyota dealerships in town. So repair cost isn't really a valid reason to not buy a BMW.
