What will basic maintenance cost per year on a BMW X5?
« on: January 09, 2008, 06:30:48 PM »
Tune UP, Oil Change, Filters, etc. I'm thinking of getting a used one and I want to be sure I can afford what all comes with the car cause I do love them so! HELP me make a decision! THANX - I'm also looking into Lexus, Mercedes, and one Jaguar out of curiosity if anyone has any comments on those costs as well. Thanks again!

As a long time BMW owner (I am on my 4th one) I can say that one of the nice things on a new BMW is that maintenance is included.  BMW does not charge for routine service for the first 36 months or 36,000 miles.  This includes oil changes, as well as wiper blades / brakes / other wear items.  After this period expires, the cars do cost more per service stop than a lower priced car -- but require fewer stops.  Oil changes typically run a somewhat mind boggling $150 -- no matter where you go -- since the BMW engines require full synthetic oil, and a lot of it.  However, the oil change interval is only once every 15,000 miles.  Compared to the typical 3,000 to 5,000 mile interval of other cars you only do one service per their 3.

Here is a link to Car And Driver's long term test where they actually calculated their cost of repairs/service:

I have also owned other luxury cars, and have been very happy with the costs associated with BMW.  I will not buy Jaguar again -- high service costs, and lots of it in my experience.  Your mileage may vary.   I think the Toyota/Lexus products are very good -- and in fact bought one for my wife.  Their vehicles are not as "fun to drive" in my opinion, so I will continue to stay with my BMWs.

They are more expensive than an average car but are no more than a MB or Audi. Avoid the jaguar its maintenance costs are about the same as BMW Audi but it will require more repairs and repair cost is high as well.  with a BMW or Audi if you stay on top of the maintenance you should see very few repairs.(maintenance being recommended maintenance and that mean ALL recommended maintenance not just oil changes)      you should be able to get your oil changes for 75 to 100 dollars with the BMW, Audi's are more in the aria of 60-85 or so depending where you take it.MB is probably the most expensive to maintain and they too have higher repair rates than BMW and Audi.  i don't consider Lexus to be in the same class as MB, Audi, or BMW  they make nice luxury cars hen it comes to comfort but they are far from a drivers car if you want driving dynamics and handling  you want a german car.
