Author Topic: 2001 Ford F 150....service engine light.....cylinder 5 misfire...?  (Read 3572 times)

My service engine soon light is on so I took it to Auto Zone for their free check and they said it's a cylinder 5 misfire and it probably needs a tune up. When you're driving the truck the only time you notice is when you hit 40mph it starts shaking. Do you think it's the spark plugs and boots or something else? What else could a cylinder 5 misfire be?

Thanks!!

I would say I see the coil as the culprit 95% of the time at work. They are not cheap but they are easy to change.

You probably just need a good tune up but if that doesnt work then try haveing your injectors checked and maybe even a crank sensor

Every time I've had a misfire problem with my 01 F-150 it was a coilpack problem.  Seems to be a common problem with these vehicles, expensive but easy to change.

I find the coil packs as everyone said sometimes break down and lead to misfire like this... and it will happen under a load such as climbing a bridge at low RPM (40 mph is about right)

If you do it yourself, recommend only the motorcraft coils which are more expensive (cheapest I've seen them is $70) but the newest ones are redesigns...  I've seen them as cheap as $40 but those sometimes cause the same problem afterwards (local police use the $40 ones and have had to replace them with motorcraft that's how I know)
