i have a 97 ford explorer. the last tune up was last year (2007). it takes at least 2 times to start it in the cold mounths. and i have to keep my foot on the accelerator for like ten min. or it'll die. i have to hold it above 1RPM or it'll die on me. Now i have been doing this for a while now and it is getting annoyeing. What should i do? i don't really want to bring it in. and i am an idiot when it comes to cars. Please help me out please.

i added "HEAT" last time i filled up and that didn't effect it at all

it's an automatic transmission

it normally idols right under 1 rpm

It could just need the throttle body cleaned out, or it could be more involved, you should get it scanned.

plugs and wires...

maybe get the injectors cleaned or put some injector cleaner in the gas the next time you fill up...

Have it hooked up to the emissions computer...

And HEET just gets rid of water in the bottom of your gas tank...

Get injector cleaner...

Try some fuel injector cleaner next time you fill up. Also try some gas line anti-freeze next time you fill up. Not sure if these will help, but will only cost you about $6.00 to try.

It should be idling over 1rpm, so you'll have to find somebody to adjust the idle for ya.

it could also be a sticking iac (idle air control) valve. its mounted on the throttle body

I have the same problem with my 98 Explorer, same exact symptoms. I think it is the 02 sensor. The part cost about $65.00 if you install it yourself. If a mechanic installs it it will cost around $200.00.

I'm guessing this is older technoloogy; sounds like the choke.

It's supposed to automatically adjust mixture for cold weather.

This is a simple fix for a mechanic, if you have one you trust.

It's too complicated for you to attempt by yourself though.

Look at the air heater sensor on the outside end of the air intake for the engine. could be a damaged wire of not connected at all. This sensor tells the computer what the incoming temperature of the air is so it can regulate the fuel flow.

Check the EGR valve   if it is defective and staying closed  it will cause this situation... when the enginge warms enough the EGR will open and the engine will run better
