How to connect laptop to car?
« on: January 16, 2008, 11:16:25 PM »
Hey everyone, well I know it can be done but I can't find much info online. I want to run tuning software on my laptop and hook it up to my ecu. I have a 95 honda accord, does anyone know how to do this?

While I appreciate your input I obviously wouldn't try it unless I knew what I was doing. Your answer wasn't close to what I asked...

Get a new ECU with tuning capabilities then take your car to a dyno tune then have them  tweek with your ecu settings.it aint really easy to do it yourself unless you now how to program fuel maps, A/F ratio ETC...

You cannot plug your laptop into your car for anything other than power.  At least not in stock form.  There are several ways to change the stock fuel injection mappings, if that is what you mean by 'tuning'.

Check out this site for more info:  http://www.phearable.net/tech/efibeginnerguide.html

Your ECU does not contain any kind of port that a generic computer will connect to and interact with.  Instead, you can modify portions of your ECU (depending on how much money you want to spend) that will allow you to change the fuel injection mappings.  You can also splice in some kind of intermediary device between your sensors and the ECU in order to 'trick' the ECU into thinking it is entering a different state so that it may produce the desired output.

While these are all ways to change your stock mapping, none of them are acutally recommended for shade-tree mechanics, as the 'tuning' is really difficult to perform without a dyno.  The pre-programmed maps typically available are usually created by speed shops with dyno equipment.

Most tuning programs come with the adapters to plug into your stock ecu...or if you buy a stand alone it hooks right in.  Not much point though since the tuning shops have the programs and equipment already and it would be cheaper to let them do it.  Besides, you'd look kinda dumb trying to tune your car with a laptop when you're not even on a dyno.  Thats one reason I laughed so hard during that first race in Fast and the Furious...I had NO idea why he had a laptop in the car with him...lol.  Everyone thinks that was funny.  Anyways, shop around for the tuning software you want.  They can range anywhere from $500-$1800 for a simple program to a full standalone setup.
