Failed smog in Nevada, high CO and high HC?
« on: January 04, 2008, 12:14:01 AM »
well i barely failed my smog on my 94 Honda Del sol 1.6 sohc vtec. here are the readings

HIGH SPEED CO results 1.26% greater than 1.20%

IDLE SPEED HC results 240 greater than 220 parts per million

well as you can see i barely failed the CO by .06% and 20 parts per million on the HC. the car has 146k on the engine so its should still be good. i did a tune up on the car at 145k cause i did a headgasket job on it. so it has new fluids, plugs, valve adjustment, thermostat, etc. the timing is at 16* which its suppose to be at.

i noticed that the tech didnt even check the timing can i just retard or advance the timing to get the car to pass?

what should i do to make the car pass?

i am running 91 octane.

ya my cat was hot i was revving it to 4500 rpm for a good 5 minutes and i drove to the smog station which was about 30 mins away.

after doing some more research i determined it wasnt my cat converter. since my nox was good.

Well, i have heard that retarding the timing will bring down your numbers (seen it done before)... If that doesn't work, buy a cheap catalytic converter and throw it on. Make sure you drive your vehicle for at least 10 minutes before taking it in to warm the engine, and get the cat good'n'hot.

Try running regular unleaded 87 instead 91. Be sure not to use any attitives in your gas just prior to test.
