My car has a P0505 code in my honda civic 1997 ex any help is appreciated?

the owner said it need a tune up but it needed more than just that. The car first had misfire detected all through the cylinders 1-4 the a map sensor and a tps sensor problem i can't remember the codes for that but after i found this out i replaced the throttle body from a junk yard and replaced the map sensor so those codes went away i replaced the distributor cap and housing. after i changed these parts the code then gives off a P0505 code idle control system....... now i know that the idle control on the throttle body is turned all the way down and i dont know if i needed to adjust anything on the throttle body but my car is a idle in between the 1 and the 2 the line right there but when i put the car into drive the idle lowers to one...... .and with the AC on it idle's at 1 just in park. It jumps when it wants to and also the car jerks ....... really i dont know what else to do but take it to a mechanic and spend hell money some one help!!!!

I'd take it to a shop asap and stop using junk yard parts hoping for a cheap fix. That kind of stuff usually costs you way more in the long run. Its like you need a lung, so you go to craigslist and get a used one, well that doesnt work and you are back to square one.

take it to autozone and have it scanned that is FREE and it takes the guess work out

the P0505 is for the idle air control valve.  In most cases the valve becomes clogged with carbon and can't regulate the idle air bypass port.  when that happens the car jerks or surges as it trys to find an idle.  



the 1997 civic has a 15 year 150,000 mile warranty on all emissions parts failure.  the idle air control valve falls under that warranty if you're below 150k miles take it to a Honda dealer

Code P0505 indicates that there's a problem detected with your Idle Control System.  It could be caused by any of the following:



* faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) valve

* clogged throttle body/improper adjustment

* intake manifold gasket air leak

* intake air hose air leak



now run your car on idle until your engine reaches operating temperature.  that means, rev up your car up to 3000 rpm until your radiator fan comes on.  and making sure nothing is powered on in your car such as headlights, fan, defogger, air conditioner. etc.



after the radiator fan comes on, release the rpm and see where it falls.



if it's less than 400 rpm, then you'll need to clean the ports in the throttle with carburetor cleaner, clean out the gunk in the screen inside your IAC valve, adjust your idle speed screw, or replace the IAC valve altogether.  A new one costs about $190 at your local auto parts store.



if it's greater than 500 rpm (which might be the case since you've mentioned idling between 1000 and 2000rpm), then you'll need to plug the upper port or hole inside the throttle opening and see what happens.



if your rpm drops, then you'll need to adjust the idle speed screw until you achieve 450 rpm.  otherwise, you may have an air leak somewhere in the throttle valve or hoses - secure and stop any air leaks you find.



Also, borrow/buy an On Board Diagnostic (OBD) scanner to help you easily reset and clear the error code when you think you've resolved the issue.  If the code reappears, then that means there's still a pending issue.
