Tuning own car?
« on: January 16, 2008, 11:15:08 PM »
Hi I just got a '96 nissan sentra 200sx and want to do some work on it, so it was given to me with a new altenator, new brakes and a battery and I really wanna make it look good, inside and out. Im planning on getting a CAI, New Seats, a scoop. What else is there that I could get to make it look good and increase its performance? And what of those things could I install myself? Oh yeah I also want to get a new exhaust system

Suspension and Brakes are already replaced/ new what else?

you could do all that yourself. But why the hell do you want a scoop? Keep it stock, that list of mods is the definition of ricer, none of them increase performance (substantially). Your talking maybe 3-5hp between the CAI and exhaust.

If your really determined on modding a 200sx, start with suspension and brakes and safety. then move to the motor.

I agree with the post above.... a vehicle is pointless with out good brakes. I would start by getting new calipers, 4 piston calipers would be best. 2nd look into getting some cross drilled rotors. They aren't much more than for looks, but do help with excessive braking. As far as mods, a CAI and exhaust wont add more than 5-10hp. and for the price of around $400+. If you really want to increase your HP, look into turbo charging your car. You can find a bunch of mods and how to's on cardomain.com and other sites. Or a motor swap. Either way, a scoop doesn't do your vehicle much good. except extra air flow into your engine compartment. And since you're not running a turbo or super charger, there's not reason why you need more air in the engine compartment

I'd definately invest in some of those 20 dollar spinning hubcaps, that will make it look 'trick'.
