Burning rubber smell coming from my 97 Subaru Lagacy?
« on: February 18, 2008, 08:48:32 AM »
My wife and I have a great little Subaru Legacy we recently purchase from a family member. We gave it it's first tune up (expensive job, but I guess boxer engines are expensive to upkeep). It runs really sweet now. My question is, we noticed a smell of burning rubber coming from the heater vents when we stopped after driving 10-15 or more minutes on the hightway before the tune up. We asked the mechanic to check it out when we got the tune up and he reported that he ran it for an hour but never smelled anything. Now it's happening again! The mechanic did say that he had a problem getting some rubber caps off the spark plug heads or something since they had not been changed in many years. Could that be the answer to the smell problem? Could there be some residue of rubber still burning from them?

Spare(rubber)tire under the hood right next to the engine? If so take it out and see(smell) if the odor continues. If not then keep the spare somewhere else.

First, I would suggest NOT using that mechanic.   Tuning up a Subaru should not have been expensive.   And those "rubber caps" should have been replaced, since I am assuming that would be the Spark Plug Wires.

I would recommend going to the service department at the Lexus dealership and ask them what is wrong, it doesn't mean that you have to have it fixed there.

did anyone check the belts or see if one of the parts is partially locked up? i.e. the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, air conditioning pump.it may also be your blower motor. try not turning the heater on and have the settings for heat(temp control)to cold or off.if you don't smell the smell your blower motor may be shot.do you ever hear noise from under the dash ( by your feet) . that is the blower motor.he was referring to the boots at the bottom of the spark plug wires. what happens is as they age the boots will break down and bake onto the head of your motor by the top of the plugs. sometimes parts are expensive in a tuneup it varies greatly by the age of the car, make, model.foreign parts are usually more expensive anyway. it may be that your mechanic has a harder time getting a supplier for foreign parts thus the higher cost. or it may be teh mechanic took you for a fool who knows nothing about cars and just hosed you!! try another shop that good friend use next time.it is possible their may be  a part of the boot burning still. check for black rubbery substance by the plugs. that would be the old boot melted on.you can lightly scrape it off with a samll screwdriver.

Who knows.  If you bought a car off a relative that doesn't take care of their car mechanically, this is what you get.  Subarus are unique unto themselves and dance to the beat of a different drummer.  They are the modern day equivalent to a VW bug (though more complex) and you would be better off going to someone who specializes in Subarus to answer that question.
